Cute as can be!

Once again I find myself feeling like I need to apologize for posting nothing but pictures of Owen, but I can't resist posting these pictures of him in this cute little outfit. Isn't he cute as can be? Thanks Valerie, for letting us borrow these cute little clothes. Owen is growing and getting so big. He now weights close to 10 pounds. I guess that shouldn't be very surprising since pretty much all he does is eat! Hopefully, he can wear a few of his cute outfits before he gets too big. He is getting a little better with sleeping, but still thinks he needs to stay awake pretty much the whole day. The other night he slept for 3.5 hours straight, which may not seem like a lot to those of you who have perfect babies, but that is good for Owen. The best part of that 3.5 hours was that I actually was sleeping as well. Now that is something to cheer about!

True Blue Through and Through

I have always loved the story of Joseph F. Smith who at the young age of 19 was asked by a drunk, armed mob if he was a mormon. Joseph responded, "'Yes, siree; dyed in the wool; true blue, through and through.'" I love this story partly, because for a number of years I thought this saying was about BYU sports, particularly BYU football. Funny, huh? It wasn't until I was much older that I realized that this was not the case. However, I really think this is what Brent hopes and dreams that Owen feels one day about BYU sports. He hopes that Owen in a few years will be able to answer not only the question, "Are you a Mormon?" But also, "Are you a BYU fan?" With these fine words, "'Yes, siree; dyed in the wool; true blue, through and through.'"(I must say that Brent has never said this in so many words, and will probably get mad at me for posting this...but just know I tell the truth.)

So, this past weekend BYU played Utah and I thought it was an appropriate time to bust out the BYU shirt. Never mind that the size is for a 6 month old and that he has no idea or care about what he is wearing. Still, he was pretty cute. Brent made him do the fight song and do a little cheer before the game. Just the beginning, I am sure of many fight songs to be sung in the future. Good thing we won. Heaven forbid his first game wearing a cougar shirt be a loss. Go Cougars!

Thanksgiving

We really didn't do anything big for thanksgiving this year. Last year we visited my brother and his family here in Missouri, so we pretty much just had a repeat of last year. Brent played football with the elders quorum in our ward, while Owen and I took a much needed nap. We ate dinner with Matt and his family and a few other families from our ward. We had soo much food. It was very yummy. We ended the night with some football and playing games. Sorry I don't have any other pictures other than of Owen in his thanksgiving outfit.

1 Month Old

Here is Owen at one month. Brent doesn't think it is necessary, since he thinks he looks the same. Even so, here are a few pictures I took tonight. Here are a few things about Owen at one month:

  • He loves to eat. He will eat and eat and eat. I am not sure if he has a off button when it comes to eating.
  • He is starting to smile, doesn't do it very often, but it is sure cute when he does.
  • He likes to pee every time you change his diaper or bathe him. That is fun.
  • He often sounds like a horse when he is waking up or really tired. I am going to try to catch it on video sometime. It is actually pretty funny.
  • He is a really noisy eater and sleeper.
  • He loves to be held, as most babies do.
  • He always has his mouth open and thinks he need to eat if he is awake.

Owen

Owen is one month old today. Crazy how time flies when you aren't getting much sleep! I finally downloaded the pictures of his birth and since I am using this as my scrapbook/journal of our family I wanted to post a few and write down a few things I want to remember.

I can't believe I am posting this picture, because I got a little mad at Brent for taking it and because I look like a train hit me. This is after our first night at the hospital. My water broke around 11 pm, but I really didn't have any big contractions until many long hours later. Even then I didn't really start feeling anything significant until I had been on pitocin for 5 hours. After I had been on the highest amount of pitocin for 1 hour, the on-call doctor concluded that I wasn't going to progress any further and that they would have to do a c-section. I was very nervous, but about 1 hour later we had our little boy! He weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces and was 20.5 inches long.

We thought we were going to get to go home on Sunday morning, but early that morning they came in and said that Owen had a really high bilirubin count and so he was going to have to have phototherapy. They insisted on telling us that he also needed a formula supplement because his count was so high that they were convinced it wouldn't come down unless he got more food to move the bilirubin out of his system. There was a lot of drama about how high his count was and at one point we had a doctor come in and tell us if it didn't go down soon they would have to start considering other options like a transfusion. As it turned out the next morning his count dropped so much that they concluded that the really high count must have been a false reading. Nice. Way to go people. Scare the heck out of brand new parents by making them think there baby is in danger of hearing loss and brain damage. What a joke. Needless to say we were happy when his count had dropped enough that they let us go home on Monday night.

This is Owen under the phototherapy lights. He actually did pretty well and didn't even cry that much while he was under them.

They sent us home with what they call a bili-blanket. We had to wrap him up in it and pretty much keep it on him at all times. It wasn't really like a blanket and it actually was quite annoying to always have to have it on him. I was sure glad when they told us he didn't have to wear it anymore. I called him my little glow worm, since while he was wearing it he was all lit up!

Things I want to remember about Owen’s birth:

  • The way I felt when I first heard him cry. It melted my heart.
  • Being so relieved and grateful that he was healthy and realizing my pregnancy was finally over.
  • Watching Brent care for and change Owen’s first diapers.
  • Hearing Brent call the nurse's station and saying, “Umm…our son finally went number two, can you come get it?” (They asked us to save the first one). I wanted to laugh so hard. I say wanted to because I started to laugh but it hurt so bad I had to have a good laugh about it a week or so later.
  • Getting a good laugh when we took him to his first doctors appointment and them telling us his height was 18 inches. So I guess he lost 2.5 inches in a week and a half? Come on people, let's be a little more accurate!

Start of Something New

Well, welcome to our blog! I finally broke down and decided it was time to start blogging, since I have pretty much given up on scrap booking. I said I would start a blog after I had a baby, concluding that our lives before that would be much too boring to blog about. I guess that time has come. I will, however, start with a few disclaimers. First, I am not a very creative person, therefore most of what I post will probably be about Owen, since he is much cuter and more interesting than either of his parents.I apologize in advance if you start to get bored because all I can seem to talk about is this little boy. Second, if you ever see random pictures of "smiling animals" on this blog, you can just assume that Brent has logged in as me and has added this ridiculous feature . He gets such a kick out the fact that blogger has a gadget designed to do such hilarious things.
